In December 2019, a novel respiratory syndrome emerged in the megacity of Wuhan, China. On 13 March 2020, the Swiss Federal Council declared an extraordinary situation; Switzerland, like most other countries, went into lockdown. Tourism came to a virtual standstill worldwide, plunging into a deep crisis due to the ongoing pandemic.

It was not until around three years later, in February 2023, that the WHO declared that the pandemic in its previous form was over. The WHO takes (preliminary) stock: Globally, 758,390,564 cases were reported, as well as 6,859,093 deaths. A total of 13,228,728,467 vaccine doses were administered.
