Switzerland Tourism ST and the country’s public transport providers scored the smash hit of summer 2021: a whole month’s travel on public transport throughout the whole of Switzerland for an unprecedented and unbeatable price of CHF 330 (2nd class). ST unveiled the summer GA travelcard – one of the first offers from the tourism industry under the new Swisstainable banner – in June. It offered something never seen before within Swiss tourism: sustainable travel across the entire country – spanning towns and cities, rural regions, lakes, mountains and valleys – for a fixed price, making the summer GA travelcard suitable for city breaks, lake cruises or excursions on selected mountain railways.

Sustainable summer holidays

The tourism industry thus chimed very accurately with the mood of the times. The irrepressible urge to take summer holidays in Switzerland in 2021, coupled with the strong need to do so in a sustainable way, meant that the moment was ripe for this offer. When the results were assessed in September, ST and the public transport service providers could look back proudly on a best-seller. The travelcards flew off the shelves: between 17 June and 15 August 2021, the last day on which it was available to buy, more than 10,400 were sold, including nearly 1,800 for first class. The summer travelcard could be used up until 15 September 2021.
